Hugh Johnson shoots Ray Mears (despite his skill as a Bush Craft expert and coach to SAS)

Hugh shot the cover and recipes for Ray Mears new book the Wilderness Chef, his second to focus on food rather than his skills as a bush craft and survival expert. Ray has presented various tv series and regularly exercises his skills to the SAS.

It was shot deep in a Forest in between thunderstorms, with Ray gutting and boning the whole salmon with his bare hands.

Ray is a black belt judo 7 dan and used to train with fashion photographer Terence Donovan, Hugh’s old boss.

You can never better the flavour of fresh wild salmon cooked over birch wood.
